A 10-hour flight connects Sao Paulo with Johannesburg in South Africa, one of the few flights connecting Africa with South America.
I arrived to a beautiful hostel in a neighborhood full of bars called Maboneng. The staff there where very friendly. I went with them to a city tour where they showed us pretty much all the relevant things you can see in the city, from street art to a panoramic view at the tallest building in Africa in the 50th floor. Although the hostel street was ok, the people were advised not to walk on the streets after 7pm and avoid walking far from the hostel so it was a good idea to do the city tour with them.
Nights were busy at the hostel, they had a bar there and I was able to meet people from everywhere, it was interesting that most people reaching South Africa where traveling for months, so we could share lots of interesting stories from the places we’ve been before.
One of the musts in Johannesburg is visiting the apartheid museum, where I spent hours learning about the story of the country, their conflicts and the incredible story of Nelson Mandela.
The weather was really good during my stay with temperatures from 20 to 30 degrees, but it does rain (and heavily) from time to time, and I could hear probably the loudest thunders ever, really insane!
South Africa was a great experience to understand the inners of a society in the past divided by racism and now growing in a totally different context although still with many social differences.
I wish I’ll be able to explore further this continent in the future.
Now I’m heading north to continue with this fascinating trip!
